ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office auto theft detective came across a Jeep matching a description of a stolen vehicle while he was undercover. Other deputies responded and it turned into a chase where gunshots were fired.

It’s a near conclusion to a chase that led to 11 Bernalillo County Sheriff’s deputies charging in a front yard. They were trying to stop Ricardo Hernandez and a woman from getting away. It started with an auto theft detective paroling and identifying a Jeep that looked stolen in the South Valley.

Other deputies responded and it led to a chase that quickly ended when Hernandez stopped in front of a home and tried to bolt inside.

Deputies hand-cuffed Hernandez and the woman then went to inspect the vehicle. Deputies say they found at least four handgun holsters, caliber casings, and a partially loaded magazine but no guns.

The criminal complaint says they heard gunshots being fired when they were following Hernandez’s vehicle. Deputies say they tried to question Hernandez about the gun and didn’t receive cooperation.

Deputy: Do you understand what I just read to you, sir?”
Hernandez: I don’t. I’m illiterate. I can hardly hear, I can’t breathe.
Deputy: Okay, what level of education have you completed?
Hernandez: I haven’t completed any education. I never went to school.

Hernandez then says he was being chased without any sirens or lights and accuses the deputies of trying to kill him and his girlfriend.

Deputy: You’re the only one who shot at us today.
Hernandez: With what? My ******* finger?
Deputy: You’re going to jail.

Hernandez is facing a list of charges including fleeing, shooting from a car, and driving a stolen car. A judge has ordered him to stay locked up in MDC while awaiting trial for the case.
