“The reason why we’re doing this is because as we’ve been cleaning beaches for almost 15 years now, we also realize we have to do something beyond cleaning, and we have to connect people to where the problem starts. And often times that’s in our daily lives. So with this event, we’re cleaning mauka. We’re actually going to be cleaning in the streets of Kaimuki and Palolo,” said Bergstrom. “We’re going to be cleaning Palolo Stream, because everything that’s up there, connects to the Ala Wai, connects to the ocean. So all of that waste that starts in our lives and our in our communities are what ends of up in the ocean. So we just want to help people understand that connect.”

“We provide all the supplies. We have gloves, reusable bags that we’ve been upcycling from the different locations we pick up the trash in. But if people are coming, especially to do the stream clean ups and stream restoration portion of the event, we asked them to wear closed-toe shoes,” said Bergstrom.
