Heavy rain persists in eastern New Mexico. Showers likely to continue through Sunday.

The rain we have been seeing throughout the day will continue into the early morning hours Sunday. The line of storms stretching from Raton to the southern border of New Mexico continues to bring heavy rain to eastern New Mexico. Later tonight the solid band of rain begins to dissipate and the rain concentrates on northeastern New Mexico. Severe thunderstorms and flooding are a continued possibility through the early morning hours on Sunday. The biggest threat with severe thunderstorms is heavy rain, damaging winds, and tornadoes. The threat of tornadoes is low but still possible.

Sunday afternoon and evening should see the rain begin to lighten. At least in comparison to today. The rain will be nearly statewide. However, the heaviest precipitation will be isolated to the northeast and the northern mountains. A few stray storm cells could also form near Roswell. The rain won’t fully leave the state until Monday Morning.

Snow will continue to accumulate tonight in the higher elevations. Winter storm watches and warnings are in place for the Sangre de Cristo and San Juan Mountains. The Sangre de Cristo Mountains can expect an additional 3-6 inches of snow at the upper elevations. The San Juan Mountains could see a total of 20 inches of snow combining yesterday, today, and tomorrows totals. The snow at the upper elevation should stick around until early next week.

The low pressure system over north central Arizona today begins to move out tomorrow. This fall low pressure has been responsible for the heavy rainfall and severe storms we have seen yesterday and today. The low will move towards the four corners by Sunday evenings. By Monday evening the low will have moved past New Mexico and into the Midwest. At the same time a ridge of high pressure will begin to form over New Mexico. Bringing clear and sunny skies next week. Temperatures will once again begin to warm back up by the end of next week. Reaching the upper 80’s across southern New Mexico and the upper 70’s across Central New Mexico.
