BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Long lines were observed across the tri-county on Monday as early voting for the Nov. 5 general election got underway.
Berkeley County saw a very heavy turnout with lines of voters stretching well outside the county’s Voter Registration and Elections Office along US Highway 52 in Moncks Corner. In fact, cars were parked along the highway for people waiting to get in and cast their ballot.
“Today, being the first day of early voting has been very busy from the beginning of the day today. Some voters have reported they have to wait in line for up to two and a half hours,” said Rose Brown, Berkeley County Director of Elections.
There are four early voting locations in the county including the Hanahan Library, Daniel Island Library, and Redeemer R.E. Church.
So long as you are in line when voting closes, you will still be allowed to vote that day.
“If you can’t get out and vote, it takes no less time than going shopping on Saturday. Just get out and vote,” said voter Mitchell Melton.
“Like our founding fathers intended, we have the right to decide the future of America. So, I decided let’s get out here and let’s get the voting done,” said voter John Pork.
“I just hope everybody takes this seriously. This is our country. We only have one, and I just hope everyone comes out and votes,” said voter Sharon Hoffman.
Early voting centers are open Monday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the early voting period. Early voting is not available on Sunday, Oct. 27. You can cast an early ballot through Saturday, Nov. 2.
A valid photo ID is required to vote in South Carolina elections.
