The delightful October weather pattern rolled along Tuesday across Central and Eastern Kentucky as high pressure continued to dominate the eastern part of the country. After a pleasantly cool start to the day with temperatures in the low to mid-40s, lots of bright sunshine combined with a south breeze pushed afternoon highs into the upper 70s to right around 80 degrees which is a solid 10 to 15 degrees above average! All the sunshine and really made it nice for checking out the fall colors around Kentucky.
Our touch of summer here in late October will continue into the mid-week despite a frontal system making a run through the Ohio Valley. This boundary won’t have any moisture to work with so we aren’t expecting any rainfall with it. Winds will pick up out of the south to southwest with gusts around 20 to 25 miles per hour at times which will help push afternoon highs back into the upper 70s as mostly sunny skies remain in place. Those highs may come earlier in the afternoon before winds shift westward and temperatures drop a few degrees by late afternoon.
The dry front will usher in some cooler air for the day on Thursday as temperatures drop back a solid 10 degrees for afternoon highs. Even with a good bit of sunshine around a northwest wind will hold temperatures down through the day with readings topping out in the mid-60s. The cooler air won’t be around long as another frontal system will follow suit and move into the area on Friday. Winds will quickly shift to the southwest ahead of the boundary so highs should bounce back into the upper 70s to end the week. There should be enough moisture to squeeze out a few showers across the commonwealth but we aren’t looking at anything widespread. At this point we are looking at one of the driest months on record here in October as most locations have seen very little rainfall through the month with little expected between now and November 1st.
Heading into the weekend another round of cooler air will settle into the Ohio Valley as Canadian high pressure drops in. We could see a lingering shower chance during part of Saturday but skies should begin to clear as the day progresses. This should set things up nicely for Kentucky and Auburn at Kroger Field on Saturday evening. You’ll want to dress accordingly as temperatures will drop off through the 50s during the game after reaching the mid-60s for highs that afternoon. Another quiet stretch of weather is expected into early next week as afternoon highs climb back into the 70s.
