WEST ASHLEY, S.C. (WCBD) – Early voters in South Carolina packed polling places like never before on Monday.
“It’s inspiring. The word is out that the vote’s important and it starts with me,” said Scott Fedewa who cast his ballot early at the Essex Village Church of Christ in West Ashley on Tuesday.
According to the State Election Commission, over 125,000 South Carolinians voted early Monday, beating the previous high of just over 70,000 on November 4, 2022.
Charleston County led state totals with a record-shattering 12,221 ballots cast.
“It’s fantastic. We’re very encouraged by the amount of people who voted early. And it’s just a tell that we’re going to see huge numbers during this early voting period,” said Isaac Cramer, the Executive Director for the Charleston County Board of Elections.
Data provided by the Commission shows Dorchester County had 5,015 voters, Georgetown had 2,535, Williamsburg had 977, and Colleton had 1,030.
Rosie Brown, the Director for Berkeley County Voter Registration and Elections, told News 2 they have enough staff to handle the more than 3,800 voters who showed up day one, but they are making parking and traffic adjustments.
“We’ve worked with the police department and other agencies within Berkeley County Government itself to alleviate the flow of traffic. Its flowing better today than it did yesterday,” Brown added.
From Mount Pleasant, to West Ashley, voters stood in long lines at voting centers for a second day, skipping the wait for November 5th.
“The experience was very easy. They’re well-informed. Kept the line moving and now I’m done,” Fedewa shared.
Early voting centers are open Monday-Saturday from 8:30 am-6 pm through November 2nd.
