TOMPKINSVILLE, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — An 8-month-old has died and a two-year-old is in the hospital after a tragic house fire in Monroe County.

State police say the fire started on Monday on West Sixth Street in Tompkinsville.

Officials say the children’s mother, 25-year-old Ashton Wright, woke up to the house full of smoke. A neighbor came over to help rescue her two-year-old, but they were unable to save her 8-month-old baby.

According to state police, the two-year-old was taken to the hospital with severe burns.

Officials say they believe an electric space heater could’ve started the fire; the investigation into the fire is ongoing.
