KILAUEA, Hawaii (KHON2) — First responders on Kauai declared a visitor dead in Kilauea while responding to an unresponsive swimmer incident.

Officials said the incident happened around 11:15 a.m. when the 62-year-old New York man was pulled from the waters off Kauapea Beach, also known as Secret Beach.

According to reports, bystanders were the first to administer CPR to the victim.

Kauai Fire Department personnel from Hanalei Fire Station responded to the incident shortly after and used an AED and Lucas device to continue resuscitation efforts.

Medics then took over and transported him to Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital where the death pronouncement was made.

Kauai police said an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death, but they do not suspect foul play.

The victim’s family was offered support by Life’s Bridges, a grief counseling service.

Officials urge visitors and residents to use caution when getting in the water of Kauapea Beach as it does not have lifeguards on duty.

Beachgoers are advised to only swim at beaches that have lifeguards.
