HARLAN COUNTY, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – State Senator Johnnie Turner has passed away from injuries sustained in a lawnmower accident over a month ago.

First elected to the Kentucky Senate in 2021, Turner had a previous tenure in the House from 1999 to 2002. He represented the 29th Senate District, which includes Bell, Floyd, Harlan, Knott, and Letcher counties.

Turner had won the May 2024 primary and was set to run unopposed in the upcoming November election.

His death has elicited condolences from across the political spectrum, including from Governor Andy Beshear, who expressed deep sadness and extended prayers to Turner’s family and friends during this challenging time.
