NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure (NDOT) announced the awardees of the first cycle of Tactical Urbanism projects.
NDOT describes Tactical Urbanism projects as temporary, “action-oriented” approaches to public roadway challenges, such as crosswalk enhancements, and have been happening in Nashville since 2012.
A press release from NDOT said the agency originally intended to support just four projects for this application cycle, but a high number of strong applications led to the selection of 14 projects. NDOT added each awardee will receive up to $20,000 to support installation.

“Tactical urbanism projects can be installed much more quickly than traditional roadway projects, while still leading to improvements in safety and function,” Tactical Urbanism Program Project Manager Matthew Cushing said in the press release. “As the projects are temporary and easy to modify, they also allow testing of new configurations in a low-risk way, where designs can be quickly and incrementally modified based on real-world use.”
