The Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) is looking to identify a suspect who is believed to be connected to a deadly attack in East Nashville.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) is looking to identify a suspect who is believed to be connected to a deadly attack in East Nashville.

The assault happened Monday, Oct. 21 on South 5th Street and Russell Street, according to MNPD.

According to an initial report about the incident, officers were called to the scene to respond to what was believed to be a hit-and-run crash. However, police said further investigation revealed that the incident was a homicide.

Just after 3 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 22, officials reported they obtained surveillance video that showed 59-year-old James Sutton stepping out his vehicle and another person approaching him from behind.

Police said the man seen in the photos above is believed to have grabbed Sutton from behind and shoved him to the ground, causing severe injuries to his head and spinal cord.

Sutton was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he died, according to MNPD. Authorities added that an investigation confirmed Sutton was never struck by a vehicle.

Anyone with information on the suspect or his whereabouts is asked to Crime Stoppers at 615-772-7463. Callers can remain anonymous and qualify for a $5,000 cash reward in homicide cases, police said.
