LEA COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – The Lea County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a man they said killed a 17-year-old in Hobbs last week.

According to deputies, two teenagers were in a car when a red Ford Focus pulled up next to them and fired several shots.

One of the teens told deputies he was involved in a fight before meeting up with their friend.

Investigators identified 22-year-old Adalberto Verdugo as a suspect, who they say told deputies he fired in self-defense.

No gun was found in the teenager’s vehicle. Verdugo was arrested and is now facing murder, assault, and gun charges.
