SMITH COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — Smith County first responders were called out Sunday evening to help remove a horse from a pond, but the animal ended up being euthanized.

The Smith County Rescue Squad said personnel were dispatched to the incident shortly before 6:45 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 27. When crews arrived at the scene, the pond was dry, but thick mud coated the bottom of it.

According to emergency officials, the horse’s owner asked if they could help get the animal out of the pond and back on solid ground.

Personnel reportedly worked about 30 minutes, using winches to remove the horse from the muddy pond bottom.

“The horse had been down sometime, and unfortunately the owners contacted the vet which had to come to the scene and euthanize the 25 year old animal,” the rescue squad posted on social media.
