RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — About 135 acres of pollinator habitats will be installed by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).

The land will support pollinators such as bees, birds, butterflies, bats, beetles, flies and more, according to the department.

This year, 107 acres of pollinator habitat plantings will be added to the Hampton Roads area, 22 acres in the greater Richmond area and about six will be added in southern Virginia. Last year, the department planted 82 new acres throughout the Commonwealth.

According to VDOT, roadside vegetation in pollinator corridors reduces erosion and stormwater runoff while providing sediment control. In addition, it reduces the need to mow frequently and helps to resist invasive plants that require the use of herbicides.
