RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Richmond Department of Public Utilities has provided the public with updates about the road work taking place on Forest Hill Avenue.

At a meeting on Monday, June 17, the department addressed public concern over the city’s Sanitary Sewer Replacement Project taking place in several areas of Forest Hill Avenue.

This project comes after the previous sewer main collapsed in April, causing substantial damage and creating the need for this substantial work.

The department reported that the first phase of the project is almost complete, which will end construction and traffic disruption west of Windsorview Drive to Powhite Parkway.

The second phase, which consists of replacing sewer mains along the eastbound lanes of the 6800 through 7000 blocks of Forest Hill Avenue, is estimated to be complete by the end of the year.

Aging infrastructure and extensive sewer rehabilitation were cited as reasons for the prolonged construction. Additionally, the department believes that future work will be required.

To help daily commuters establish alternative routes they can take, a proposed detour map was provided during the meeting.

Several residents voiced their concerns about the lack of traffic control monitoring, as civilians often disobey new traffic laws, and important lanes remained closed.

Along with restricted access to storefronts, the lane closures have allegedly affected emergency transport.

“Emergency services have no viable way [to travel], that does not cause delays, which can be life or death,” said a member of the public during the meeting.

Those representing the Department of Public Utilities at the meeting were unable to answer the majority of these questions.

“We just ask that you be patient with us,” said Susan Hamilton, Program and Operations Manager at the Department of Public Utilities, to several resident concerns.

There will be another meeting held by the department in August of this year. Further information about the date and time has yet to be released.
