BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — The role of artificial intelligence (AI) in education was the theme of this year’s Governor’s Summit on Innovative Education held in the National Energy Center of Excellence at Bismarck State College on Monday, June 17.

AI is quickly becoming integrated into our lives whether we know it or not. AI technology is already being used in many devices that we use every day such as smart phones, TVs, and even smart kitchen appliances.

While the use of AI technology will grow in the coming years, there are concerns over what else it could be used for. Many educators from across the state met to discuss how artificial intelligence should be used responsibly in the classroom.

Among the concerns addressed at the summit, was AI’s influence over privacy and academic integrity. “Wherever AI technology is going, teachers can start with helping students understand how to use AI effectively and responsibly,” explained Pat YongPradit, Chief Academic Officer for Code.org

YongPradit said that AI literacy is not just for teachers and students, “It’s for every adult in the education system as well. Everyone has to build this AI literacy, so that we can use AI for good, and understand how not to use AI in certain ways as well.”

YongPradit also said that educators need to prepare students for a future workforce that could be influenced by the use of artificial intelligence. He foresees that some jobs will eventually be replaced by AI technology, while other jobs will require students to have the knowledge of how to work with the technology.
