A 33-year-old driver died Monday afternoon after crashing on a transition road from Interstate 5 to Interstate 8

A 33-year-old driver died Monday afternoon after crashing his SUV on Interstate 5 near Mission Bay, officials said.

The man was gravely injured when he lost control of his Toyota 4Runner while heading on the transition road from south I-5 to eastbound Interstate 8 around 12:50 p.m. The vehicle overturned and came to a rest in the center median of north I-5, CHP Officer Salvador Castro said in a news release.

The driver was ejected from the vehicle and sustained major injuries. He was transported to the hospital, where he died, Castro said.

It was unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash. Officers closed the three left lanes of north I-5 as the crash was investigated.

The name of the man who died was not immediately released.
