RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) has ordered that American and Virginia state flags be flown at half-staff on Wednesday in honor of a Charles City County sergeant who died in the line of duty.

According to the June 18 flag order, all U.S. and state flags on all state and local buildings and grounds are to be lowered to half-staff on Wednesday, June 19, in remembrance of Sgt. Floyd H. Miles, Jr. of the Charles City County Sheriff’s Office, who died on the job.

On Sunday, June 9, Miles had a fatal “medical emergency” following an altercation with 60-year-old Derek Croom of Portsmouth. Croom has since been charged in connection to that incident.

Miles’ funeral will also take place on Wednesday, with services scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at Charles City County High School, located at 10039 Courthouse Road. His burial will be private.

According to the order, flags are to be lowered at sunrise on Wednesday and remain that way until sunset.
