RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — UNKNWN Football Club’s first annual summer season is coming to a close this weekend, and 8News spoke with the team’s founder and co-captain to learn more.

UNKNWN Football Club is a semi-professional women’s soccer league owned by UKNWN Athlete, a women and minority-owned business based in Richmond that is designed to train pre-college, college, pre-pro and pro players.

8News spoke with UNKNWN founder and CEO Lauryn Hutchinson and UNKNWN Football Club’s co-captain Savannah Taylor to learn more about the team.

8News Weekday Morning Anchors Delaney Hall and Autumn Childress interview UNKNWN founder Lauryn Hutchinson and UNKNWN Football Club’s co-captain Savannah Taylor.

Hutchinson said UNKNWN Football Club was created because of the players on the team.

“My young ones grew up and they looked at me and said ‘well, what do we do next?’ and I said, ‘alright, we go semi-pro. We go pro.’ and I had to fulfill a need for our players. We needed to play games, because training just wasn’t enough,” Hutchinson said.

Taylor described the team’s dynamic as being a wide range of players with different experience levels.

“We have some girls that are 14 and some that are 28, 29,” Taylor said. “So really, just, we all have to work together to teach each other and grow.”

UNKNWN Football Club had a challenging start to their season with three losses, however the team is looking up with three recent wins.

“Right now, it’s been tough starting out with three losses, and then going into three wins, but it has been awesome to bond. That has been the biggest thing,” Hutchinson said.

The team will close out their first annual summer season this weekend with two final games scheduled on Friday, June 21 at 7 p.m. against the Washington Dutch Lions at Bon Secours Training Facility and Saturday, June 22 at 5 p.m. against Arlington Soccer at Hummel Bowl.
