After months of petitioning, an initiated measure is close to being on the November ballot.

BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — After months of petitioning, an initiated measure is close to being on the November ballot.

15,582 signatures are needed by July 8 to get adult use of marijuana on our next ballot.

The initiated measure is pushed by New Economic Frontier, and they are working toward a bill that would not only legalize marijuana for adult use, but it would also use conservative limits on the measure.

As of June 18, the measure has 15,179 signatures which is just 403 shy of what they need.

This weekend, New Economic Frontier will be hosting drive-through signature drives. There will be locations in Fargo, Grand Forks, Minot, and Bismarck.

Steve Bakken, chairperson for New Economic Frontier said that this measure is different than the others that haven’t passed in recent years because it keeps conservative values.

“This measure goes a long way to make sure that those conservative values in North Dakota are checked. Plus, the ability down the road for the state to figure out whatever the path is but taxation of this as well. Pulling recreational cannabis use out of the back alleys and out of the black market, has a lot of benefits for law enforcement and the judicial system and the finances and the state of North Dakota,” said Bakken.

If the measure gets on the November ballot, Bakken said that their next step is to educate the public and tell them what this measure would mean for North Dakotans.
