CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Two adults and two children were rescued in a joint effort by Chesterfield and Henrico County crews after their boat washed ashore on the James River.

Just before 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 20, crews from both Chesterfield and Henrico counties, including Chesterfield Fire and EMS, the Chesterfield Police Department and the Henrico County Division of Fire, received a call about a boating accident on the James River near Falling Creek.

When Chesterfield firefighters arrived, they found a small white boat that washed ashore on the Henrico side of the James River. As they were on the other side of the river, Chesterfield firefighters used a drone to communicate with those on the boat to check if they were hurt.

Luckily, there were no reported injuries.

According to officials, Henrico Fire crews were the first to arrive with a boat, shortly before Chesterfield’s arrived. They helped everyone off of the boat and brought them to safety.

Thursday, June 20 marked the start of the summer season, which will see more people in or near the water, whether that’s in the pool, splash pads or soaking up the sun on the James. Henrico fire is stressing the importance of knowing basic water safety measures that could potentially save you or another’s life.

A spokesperson for Chesterfield Fire & EMS told 8News that the cause of the accident is not yet clear.
