The Azzurris needed a last-gasp equalizer from Mattia Zaccagni to draw 1-1 with Croatia on Monday.
The result means Luciano Spalletti’s men will finish second behind Spain, who defeated Albania 1-0 to top Group B.
Italy will now play Switzerland for a place in the quarter-final.
England have also qualified with a game to spare, following Spain’s victory.
Germany, Spain and Portugal have also booked their spots in the last 16.
