AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – The work continues to build the new School of Public Health and Health Sciences (SPHHS) Hub on the UMass campus in Amherst.

New electricity program offered in Amherst starting November

The University of Massachusetts Amherst officials dug their ceremonial shovels into the dirt on Tuesday, symbolizing the start of building their new SPHHS Hub.

The almost 27,000-square-foot building will be a headquarters for students and faculty in the Public Health program. The building will provide space, technology, and resources to support learning, innovation, and collaboration for students and faculty.

“And this building is being described as the hub for our students, faculty, and staff, I also know that it will be a hub for connection for all of our departments, for all of our colleges across the campus, and more importantly with you, our community,” said Javier Reyes, the Chancellor of University of Massachusetts Amherst.

The school will be the only publicly accredited School of Public Health in New England and currently, the Public Health program at UMass is ranked 29th in the latest U.S. News and World Report.

The building will have an area for students to gather, but also a seminar room for outside organizations to host events, inviting the community onto campus. When students graduate from the SPHHS, 88 percent stay and work in the state of Massachusetts.

The project is on track to be finished around the end of 2025 or the beginning of 2026.
