CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Fans will not attend the upcoming Bishop England and Philip Simmons High School varsity game.

Bishop England’s principal said the decision was made “out of an abundance of caution” amid concerns that have been posted to social media across the state related to threats of violence and the “current climate between fan bases.”

The school said free streaming will be provided for everyone who wants to watch the game.

Additionally, the junior varsity and B-team games scheduled for Thursday evening are canceled.

“Safety is always our top priority and is the driving force in this decision. As a Catholic school, we strive to provide an environment that is not only safe for our community but is also steeped in the Gospel values of faith, hope, and charity. While we are disappointed that these changes are necessary,” said Mary Anne Tucker.
