GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD)–It has been nearly 24 hours since the National Weather Service issued an advisory for potential tropical cyclone 8 off the Carolina Coast, expected to bring strong winds, heavy rains, and some coastal flooding. Leaders said the most severe impacts moved through earlier this morning.

“Our coastal communities should be experiencing the worst conditions they should expect from the system. If they haven’t already, we will continue to have gusty conditions throughout the day,” said Brandon Ellis, the Georgetown County Emergency Director.

While the wind knocked down some trees and some coastal flooding earlier on Monday, residents said these conditions are mild compared to what they’ve been through.

“I’ve been here since 1983, so I’ve been through Hugo, so I feel it’s just going to roll in and roll out, and we’ll deal with it,” said Della Ramsey, a resident.

Town officials said they still have one more high tide on Monday evening, and the risk for rip currents is high, so while conditions may not appear dangerous now, they’re urging everyone to use caution.

“I understand it’s early August, but just be careful and maybe swim with someone else. If the surf looks rough, perhaps you can admire it from the beachfront,” said Daniel Newquist, The town of Pawleys Island Administrator.

Officials said emergency personnel will continue to patrol heavy flood areas, and again, they are reminding you to check the weather conditions before heading out.
