CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The celebration of African American and Caribbean culture is expected to fill the city as the MOJA Arts Festival returns for its 40-year anniversary.

Organizers released the schedule and line-up at the Charleston City Hall on Tuesday.

In celebration, city’s office of cultural affairs and MOJA’s festival committee have slated entertainers from local to international. This year’s artistic director, Charlton Singleton, described the vision for this 11-day event.

“We wanted to make sure it was just enhanced as much as possible,” the Grammy-Award winning musician said. “A lot people have thought of the festival of being more of a local festival, but at the same time those people would talk about it being something a lot bigger.”

Singleton said that getting noticed and taking advantage of that momentum has allowed the festival to elevate to a bigger scale.

Additionally, organizers announced that Demetrius Bing, a local Charleston artist, is the poster artist of the year. His painting, “Sometimes I Cry,” spoke to Singleton which led to it being selected.

The MOJA Arts Festival will be on September 26-October 6. Tickets are available for concerts and performances, while most art exhibitions, parades, and dance parties are free.
