It was another warm one across Central and Eastern Kentucky Thursday with a mix of clouds and sunshine and temperatures surging into the mid to upper 80s for afternoon highs. We managed to overachieve with highs despite a northeast breeze which typically has a cooling effect and holds out temperatures in check a bit. With the stubborn upper low spinning slowly to our east, we still saw a few little isolated showers pop up mainly into far Eastern Kentucky but the warmth/heat will be the bigger story as we close out the week on Friday.

High pressure should be off to our northeast on Friday along with a frontal boundary to our west so the commonwealth should be in the sweet spot for a dry and very warm Friday. Afternoon highs should surge into the upper 80s for most locations with the Bluegrass region topping the 90 degree mark. With the fall season on the horizon this weekend, it appears Mother Nature isn’t going down without a fight this year. Humidity levels shouldn’t be overly high so it should be a nice evening for high school football across the area, especially given the earlier sunset now which will take the edge off the warmth.

Heading into the weekend and the final day of summer on Saturday it’s definitely going to feel like it once again with highs topping out in the upper 80s/low 90s. The only change is a weak frontal boundary and some energy riding through the Ohio Valley that now may provide just enough lift and moisture to squeeze out an isolated storm potentially. This chance will of course mean a touch more humidity to go along with the hot temperatures so definitely hydrate properly and wear sunscreen if you are headed to Kroger Field for the Kentucky/Ohio football game on Saturday at 12:45pm…or for any outdoor activities for that matter.

The fall season officially arrives at 8:43 am Eastern on Sunday but we should be set-up for another warm, summer-like day with highs in the upper 80s and the stray storm chance with the afternoon warmth. A slow moving frontal boundary will work into the area into early next week increasing our chances for a few much needed showers and storms and knocking our temperatures down a bit into the low to mid-80s for highs.

The latest Drought Monitor our Thursday doesn’t paint a good picture for the dry conditions across the region as parts of the commonwealth have fallen deeper into the severe drought and far northeastern Kentucky up around Ashland is now in an extreme drought so we could really use some solid rain chances over the next few weeks.
