The Town of Smyrna has asked for residents’ comments on their Safety Action Plan.

SMYRNA, Tenn. (WKRN) — The Town of Smyrna has asked for residents’ comments on their Safety Action Plan.

The plan aims to improve roadway safety through reducing, or eliminating, roadway fatalities. According to the Smyrna Safety Action Plan website, the plan will focus on all road users, which includes pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists.

Residents can participate in a variety of ways, such as through public comment or by taking a survey. Several longtime Smyrna residents told News 2 that they believe the city’s population has grown too fast. That growth, they argue, has caused added pressure on street infrastructure.

“I have this game where I will sit in my window and watch cars driving so fast that I can’t see the color of the vehicle,” resident Kenneth McGinness said. “There’s children on the street in the morning and buses in the afternoon, and cars are driving 70 miles an hour.”

Other residents mentioned heavy traffic congestion on Sam Ridley Parkway, Lowry Street and Enon Springs Road. They believe those roads need updates to meet increased traffic needs.

“Smyrna is a growing city,” resident Lillian Davis said. “People need to be aware of the different areas and how dangerous they can be and be more aware of each other.”

The website also includes a safety dashboard that gives residents information on area crashes. The dashboard includes information about the time when the crash occurred, what the speed limit on the road was, and how bright it was at the time of the crash.

As Smyrna continues to grow, city leaders have encouraged the public to make their voices heard. If you have any questions, you can contact officials with the Safety Action Plan via email here.
