ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) –  It was an act of vandalism turned into a message of positivity. Earlier this month, someone graffitied the word “trump” on the wall of the New Mexico Black Leadership Council Building.


42 New Mexico veterans honored in Forgotten Heroes ceremony

Instead of covering it up, the nonprofit decided to turn it into a mural encouraging people to get out and vote. “So we saw that and we decided that instead of just covering it up with paint, we decided to make it something that can benefit the community…Even though this was done in a hateful way, we wanted to respond in a loving way and encourage people to vote to get their voices out about what they want to say instead of tagging a wall with it,” said Marcus Porter, New Mexico Black Leadership Council.

Even though the graffiti was political, Porter said the mural is a non-partisan way of showcasing their initiatives.
