HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – The Western Mass Council of Boy Scouts presented Sheriff Nick Cocchi with the Distinguished Citizen Award Thursday night for serving as a role model for youth.

The ceremony kicked off at the Log Cabin where Sherrif Cocchi accepted the award on behalf of the Hampden County Sheriff’s Office for their efforts in building a stronger community, as well as the work they’ve done with the Boy Scouts, such as their camp and fundraising efforts.

Cocchi says he’s happy to be a positive figure for youth to look up to, “Being a coach, being a mentor, that’s right there. And when you can be a role model for the Boy Scouts of America or for any youth coming up throughout our community, that’s a tremendous responsibility. But it’s also a great honor and it’s simply leading by example.”

This same award was given to retired Sheriff Michael Ashe 15 years ago, and Thursday night it was renamed in honor of him.
