The Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation held a graduation ceremony at the Mission Memorial Auditorium to celebrate 18 Basic Corrections Recruit Class 24-04 graduates.

Corrections department offers competitive pay and career advancement

After being redesignated from the Department of Public Safety, the DCR has graduated four classes of corrections officers, compressed the recruit training course from 11 weeks to eight weeks and doubled the number of graduating classes.

Recruits completed more than 300 hours of classroom instruction and physical training to cover standards of conduct, crisis intervention, mental health, first aid and more.

Officials said each incoming class receives both Recruit Field Training and Basic Corrections Training.

They then get a taste of their jobs by heading into the facility with guidance from their training sergeants.

As of now, the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation needs 380 ACOs out of 1,500 authorized ACO positions. Each graduating class helps to address this staff shortage at facilities in Hawaii.

We diligently continue our efforts to fill ACO vacancies. This graduating class (BCRC 24-04) reflects those efforts.

Tommy Johnson, DCR Director

Our goal is to reduce recidivism and generational incarceration and enhance the safety and security of our communities,” the DCR said in a press release.
