LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KRQE) –  KRQE News 13 has obtained new video of the moments the man accused of carjacking and killing an elderly man in Santa Fe last month was arrested and tried to evade police. Zachary Babitz, the man wanted for the murder of 83-year-old Gordon Peter Wilson outside a Best Buy in Santa Fe, was arrested in Las Cruces following a dramatic police chase.

Man who shot at car at Albuquerque convenience store given probation

Body camera footage showed Babitz attempting to evade arrest by pretending to be asleep in a nearby dumpster. When confronted by officers, Babitz claimed he was homeless and tried to put the blame on a fictitious man and said he saw another tattooed man who he claimed discarded a BB gun near the scene. New footage showed the moments Babitz tried to run from police as they were taking him to the hospital after his arrest.

He is facing federal carjacking and firearm charges for the Santa Fe murder. He pled not guilty to his federal charges last week.
