HALEIWA, Hawaii (KHON2) — As coastal erosion threatens homes on Ke Nui Road, the DLNR and the City and County of Honolulu warn homeowners and the community about potential risks to their properties.
The announcement comes after officials announced a second beachfront home to be scheduled for demolition. One multi-million dollar home began the demolition process on Thursday after pieces of it started falling into the ocean.
Officials said they are concerned with the “unpredictable situation” and aim to raise awareness and encourage homeowners to take proactive measures.
“While the circumstances are unfortunate, debris on the public beach or falling into the ocean endangering the community and marine life is unacceptable and we will take all appropriate action to protect the public and our natural and cultural resources,” DLNR Chair Dawn Chang said.
As waves are generated, sand shifts and undercuts the properties, compromising the structural integrity of a home.
For safety, signs have been posted along Ke Nui Road to inform beachgoers that the beach is closed. Community members and visitors are also advised to avoid the area.

Property owners are urged to take the proper precautions to avoid damage to their homes. If they fail to take action, the DLNR and DPP warn they may take administrative or legal action for the health and safety of the public.
