HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – The third annual Magic for Maddie fundraiser is being held in Holyoke in honor of an 8-year-old girl who lost her battle against brain cancer.

Madeline ‘Maddie’ Schmidt lost a 10-month battle against diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), a form of brain cancer. In her memory, her family created the non-profit Magic for Maddie LLC, which hosts events like the Magic for Maddie fundraiser to spread kindness in her name.

The Magic for Maddie fundraiser featuring a 5k, 2-mile walk and carnival is scheduled for October 19th at Ashley Reservoir in Holyoke and the Holyoke Elks located at 250 Whitney Ave in Holyoke. It will include food and ice cream trucks, live music, bounce houses, magic shows, games, a dunk tank, a raffle, and more.

To register for the walk or run, or to donate, visit magicformaddie.com. Proceeds from the event will benefit brain cancer research, local families affected by cancer, and organizations.

“Although cancer is what took Maddie’s life, it is not her legacy,” said Nora Schmidt, Maddie’s mother. “In eight short years, Maddie loved deeply, shined brightly, and inspired a community with her kindness, tenacity, and sparkle. We want to thank our amazing community for your support during our darkest hours and we hope this event will bring a little of Maddie’s magic to all who attend. We know Maddie will always leave a little sparkle wherever she goes.”

Mass Appeal host Patrick Barry will be the emcee for the event.
