A stolen check has landed a man in jail on a felony charge.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A man is behind bars after he is accused of stealing a check from a Nashville mailbox and cashing it earlier this summer.

According to the Metro Nashville Police Department, a man placed a check for $50,000 in his mailbox to be mailed. Later that day, police say Mike Gregory, 62, and an unnamed female were seen on surveillance footage from a Regions Bank on Gallatin Avenue depositing the check into Gregory’s bank account.

Gregory altered the check by adding “or Mike Gregory” onto the payee line, according to authorities.

The next day, Gregory and the woman were seen on surveillance footage from a different Regions Bank on 4th Avenue attempting to withdraw all the money from Gregory’s account.

The two were reportedly unable to withdraw the full amount but were able to withdraw $24,500, which they placed into the woman’s purse.

Police said the pair then went to another Regions Bank on 21st Avenue to attempt to withdraw the remaining $24,500. However, a bank teller at that branch became suspicious and called the victim about the check.

When asked about the check recipient, the victim advised the bank the check was never made out to a Mike Gregory and that it had been stolen.

Gregory was arrested for Theft of Mail over $10,000 but less than $60,000, which is a Class C felony. He is currently held in the Metro Jail on a $40,000 bond for the theft of mail charge and forgery.
