COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCBD) – State officials say 41 people have died in South Carolina as a result of last week’s hurricane.

Helene began lashing portions of South Carolina on Thursday afternoon before moving inland near Florida’s Big Bend region as a powerful category 4 hurricane, and then north into Georgia.

The storm’s outer rain bands brought high winds, tornadoes, and heavy rain to much of South Carolina through Friday.

In their update Thursday afternoon, the South Carolina Department of Public Safety confirmed 41 storm-related deaths. The deaths were confirmed by each county’s coroner.
