“Boat rides were a popular activity, and we’re excited to offer free boat rides again for the community to experience the reservoir, thanks to the support of DAR and the Wahiawā community,” said Curt Cottrell, DSP Administrator.

Officials said the goal of the event was to foster community stewardship and pono outdoor recreation enthusiasts to build appreciation for the park and its resources.

The state is currently negotiating with Dole to acquire the lake and the dam to improve the spillway as well as make other improvements to the park.

“We’re doing planning right now. The first phase is a small community amphitheater, fishing platforms, some pathways in certain areas around the lake, expand the comfort stations and improve the parking,” Cottrell added.

“There’s a lot of excitement about the public owning the asset not just for fishing and for the usage of the park, but also things like frisbee golf, maybe things like tantalos, for the community,” said Senator Donovan Dela Cruz, (D) Wahiawa.

The state hopes that once the spillway is fixed, fishing can be improved and north shore farmers can also benefit from the freshwater.
