A tugboat powered by ammonia traveled along the Hudson River on Monday.
KINGSTON, N.Y. (NEWS10) — A tugboat powered by ammonia traveled along the Hudson River on Monday. It originally ran on diesel fuel and set sail from a Kingston port in Ulster County.
The company behind the change said the successful voyage is a big milestone in a race to reach zero emissions.
“The maritime and heavy-duty power industries generate a significant portion of global carbon emissions, and the advantage of using ammonia as a fuel is it eliminates carbon from that cycle entirely,” Amogy project lead Abigail Jablansky said.
The company said the ship still creates trace amounts of nitrogen oxides, but they are working to completely eliminate them.
