COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCBD) – Almost 50 people have died in South Carolina as a result of Hurricane Helene and its impact on the state. That number could still rise.

Heather Biance with the South Carolina Department of Public Safety said there have been 49 confirmed storm-related fatalities. Most of those were in Aiken County where 11 deaths were reported.

The storm began lashing South Carolina as a hurricane after making landfall in Florda’s Big Bend region on the night of September 26. It moved north into Georgia and brought very high winds, rain, and tornadoes to the Palmetto State as a tropical storm.

Many deaths have been reported in the storm’s aftermath, including the 11 in Aiken, nine in Spartanburg, seven in Greenville, and five each in Anderson and Newberry counties.
