NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – A popular geological location in New Mexico will be closed to the public starting on Monday.
The U.S. Forest Service said the Gilman Tunnels, located in the Jemez Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest, will be closed as crews conduct a rock stabilization project.
Officials said the area will be closed to all traffic, including motorized, non-motorized, and foot. The Forest Service said the project involves removing loose and unstable rocks. It will also involve injecting a substance into the rock face and installing bolts to increase stability. A similar project took place in the area in 2017.
Officials estimate the area will reopen in December.
