The woman “felt her life would be easier if she only had to care for one dog and cut one of the dog’s throats,” say officials.

(FOX40.COM) — A 41-year-old California woman was arrested and accused of animal cruelty after she cut her dog’s throat and placed it alive in a trash can, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.

On Wednesday, SCSO responded to an apartment complex in Carmichael after a caller found a dog in a trash can with something tied around its neck. Deputies said the dog had a laceration under its throat but was still alive. Upon arrival at the scene, deputies found the dog and called animal control.

Witnesses told officials that the dog’s owner lived in the complex. They identified her as a 41-year-old woman who was the caretaker for two dogs and one cat. Deputies said the woman “felt her life would be easier if she only had to care for one dog and cut one of the dog’s throats” on Monday. While the dog was still alive, SCSO said she placed it in a shopping bag and disposed of it in the garbage bin at her apartment complex on Tuesday.

A search of the woman’s apartment led to the discovery of a knife that deputies presume was used in the incident. She was arrested and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail where she was released shortly after. The other dog was taken by animal control, however, SCSO said it could not find the cat.

Deputies said they fear other animals may have been harmed while in her care since she “moved around regularly.” The incident is under investigation and anyone with information can call the sheriff’s office at (916) 874-5115 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at (916) 443-HELP (4357).
