MERCER COUNTY, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – A firefighter is recovering after he fell through a staircase while battling a blaze at a two-story house on Beaumont Avenue in Mercer County earlier today.

Mercer County Emergency Management reported the firefighter was bruised but is expected to be ok.

Officials say the fire started upstairs, and during the efforts to extinguish it, the firefighter fell from the second-story stairwell down to the basement steps. Remarkably, the firefighter managed to exit the home unassisted.

Following the incident, all firefighting teams were withdrawn from the house as a safety precaution, and the fire was successfully extinguished. Crews continue to look into what caused the fire.
