A Blackman High School student died and three others were injured in a Tuesday morning crash that took place in Murfreesboro, according to officials.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WKRN) — A Blackman High School student died and three others were injured in a Tuesday morning crash that took place in Murfreesboro, according to officials.

The Murfreesboro Police Department said the crash happened around 11 a.m. on Veterans Parkway near Kingdom Drive.

On Wednesday, investigators said they are working to determine if excessive speed played a role in the crash that involved three Blackman High School students.

According to Fatal Accident Crash Team Investigators (FACT), a 47-year-old driver traveling in a Acura MDX was attempting to turn left onto Veterans Parkway into the path of an Audi A4 sedan, which was being driven by a 16-year-old.

Authorities reported the vehicles collided and spun several times before coming to a final rest, resulting in both sustaining significant damage.

A 14-year-old front seat passenger in the Audi reportedly died at the scene. Meanwhile, the 16-year-old driver and a 14-year-old back seat passenger were initially taken to Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital, but later transported to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital in Nashville for further treatment.

The 47-year-old Acura driver was also taken to Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital. All three are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

In a statement to News 2, Rutherford County Schools Communications Chief James Evans said the students were on their way back to school following a volleyball tournament at Rockvale High School.

We had three students who were in a serious accident Tuesday while traveling back to school following a volleyball tournament at Rockvale High School. Unfortunately, one of the students did not survive the accident, and the other two students are being treated for reported non-life-threatening injuries. This is a heartbreaking tragedy for our school community, and we have additional counselors available at the school today for anyone who needs to speak with someone.

Evans added that the student’s identity will not be released out of respect for the family.

A portion of the Veterans Parkway remained closed Tuesday afternoon as crews worked to clear the scene. The roadway has since reopened.

FACT Team Commander Lt. Zachary Ferrell urged all drivers to practice responsible driving behaviors.

“We urge all drivers, teens and adults, to understand that every decision made while driving can have life-altering consequences,” Ferrell said. “Responsible driving behaviors can prevent future tragedies on our roadways.”

According to Murfreesboro police, FACT investigators are conducting a thorough investigation, which includes “vehicle speeds and other contributing factors.”
