NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)- North Charleston Mayor Reggie Burgess is still deciding which of the six finalists will be the city’s next police chief.

The final six candidates — selected from the original pool of 34 candidates — were announced on September 16. They include two finalists from within the department, one from the City of Charleston, and three from various police departments across the country.

Who are the six finalists for North Charleston Police Chief?

Final in-person interviews were conducted in front of a 10-person panel a couple of days later on September 18.

A city spokesperson said Wednesday that Mayor Burgess received final background checks from the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF) on Tuesday, the last step in the process before a choice is made.

“This decision is of utmost importance to the safety, trust, and future of our city, and Mayor Burgess is committed to ensuring that the process is thorough and thoughtful,” Tony Tassarotti said. “While we understand the community’s anticipation, this is not a decision that can be taken lightly.”

Tassarotti added that a decision is “imminent” but did not give a specific timeline.

“The Mayor is carefully reviewing all aspects of the candidates’ qualifications, leadership abilities, and community relationship skills,” he said. “Though a decision is imminent, it will not be rushed. Ensuring we select the right leader for our police department remains the top priority.”

The North Charleston Police Department has been without a permanent chief since the end of June when former Chief Greg Gomes retired.

“We appreciate the patience and understanding of our residents as we approach this critical moment for North Charleston,” Tassarotti added.

Burgess, who served as North Charleston Police Department chief for five years from 2018 to 2023, has the final say in who becomes the next chief.

His decision is not subject to approval by the city council.
