The season is calming down, but there is still more than a month to go before hurricane season is over.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season has been active, with an above-average number of tropical storms and hurricanes. The season is calming down, but there is still more than a month to go before hurricane season is over.

Tropical activity has dramatically calmed down over the last few weeks, and Wednesday, October 23 marks the first day without tropical activity since August 26.

Since August 26, there have been 10 storms, seven of them hurricanes. The majority of storms occurred during the less than two-month period between the middle of September and now.

If you remember, the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season started very active with three storms forming at the end of June. That’s when Hurricane Beryl became the earliest Category 5 hurricane on record. July was calm, then we had Debby and Ernesto in August.

Quiet conditions returned for the end of August and the beginning of September, which is typically the most active time of the year. In early September, the National Hurricane Center’s forecast for a very active season looked like it was going to be wrong.

The extremely active October made up for the quiet periods, and now the forecast is nearly perfect.

There is still more than a month remaining so we could see a couple of additional named storms.

How common are hurricanes in November?

There is a steep dropoff in the number of tropical systems that form in November.

Since 1851 there have been a total of 99 tropical storms or hurricanes that have formed in November. That means on average we see less than one system each year.

In 2020, we saw multiple hurricanes in November and two of them were major Category 4 hurricanes.

Since 1851 there have only been a handful of major hurricanes form in November so it’s very unlikely we will see what happened in 2020 occur this year.
