LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW)- Kentucky’s new era under Head Coach Mark Pope is off to a winning start after the Wildcats beat Kentucky Wesleyan 123-52 at Rupp Arena on Wednesday in an exhibition game.

Lamont Butler led the way for the Wildcats in several categories including rebounds and steals. On the scoring side of things, Jaxson Robinson had 19, a team high.

In-state talents Travis Perry and Trent Noah, both freshman, had five and 12 points respectively. Both scored their first points for their home state team in the second half.

Kentucky looked very much in control of themselves and the game at the half when they were up 60-24. Pope’s goal to attempt 35 three pointers a game was smashed as the Cats put up 42 three balls.

Pope was pleased with the effort, but says the team needs to work on communication, focus and rebounding before they take on Minnesota State Mankato in the second exhibition game.

That home game is on Tuesday October 29 at 7 p.m. before the Cats open their regular season versus Wright State at home on November 4.
