Voting can be confusing for anyone, especially for Texas residents who move during the election. The ballot you cast, either the limited or presidential ballot, will depend on whether you’re moving between counties or out of Texas all together.
The Texas Election Code only allows for voters to vote using a limited ballot only during the early voting period, which ends on November 1, 2024. The presidential ballot can be cast in early voting and on Election Day.
Early voting in Texas runs from Monday, October 21 through Friday, November 1. Election Day is November 5.
Limited ballots
According to the Secretary of State, a voter who is registered to vote in the county they moved from is eligible for the limited ballot. A limited ballot will include statewide races and any district offices that are in common between the former and new counties of residence.
The state voting authority says “the early voting clerk must verify that the applicant has an active registration in the county of former residence and does not yet have an effective registration in the county of new residence, prior to providing a limited ballot.”
The department says that limited ballots must be cast at the main early voting polling place in Texas counties. In Bexar County, the main early voting location is the Bexar County Election Department at 1103. S. Frio St., San Antonio, TX 78207. Voters do not have to apply for voter registration in their new county of residence prior to voting using a limited ballot.
If a voter is approved to use a limited ballot, the application will serve as voter registration in the new county for future elections.
